'Hutch, somebody ran over my brother in a horse-drawn carriage. I'm going to find whoever it was and I'm going to hurt them,' declares one of the underwritten twentysomething characters in Buena Vista's horror thriller,. That memorable chestnut is just one of the many lame lines of dialogue in this tedious but not unwatchable popcorn flick whose nifty premise owes a nod to The Ring.In addition to being the title of co-writer/director William Brent Bell's film, is also the name of an underground video game that, like the underground videotape circulating in The Ring, dooms many of the protagonists to a grisly death. After learning of the horrible deaths of three of his friends, protagonist Hutch MacNeil (Jon Foster, brother of X3's Ben 'Angel' Foster) 'inherits' the underground game.
Soon, he and his generic pals (goth chick Sophia Bush, spazzy techie Frankie Muniz, obnoxious Jimmi Simpson, and Hutch's boss Adam Goldberg) play the game. They are joined by Abigail (Samaire Armstrong), who met Hutch at the funeral of one of their mutual friends. Long story short: by playing the game, one unleashes the vengeful spirit of real-life 'Blood Countess' Elizabeth Bathory who then kills the gamers just as their characters were offed in the game. At a certain point, it doesn't even matter if one stops playing: you're screwed. Naturally, Hutch and friends, like the Scooby Doo gang, have to stop her. It's the writing that dooms Stay Alive.
All of the characters are merely types, one-note and generic. We've seen variations of all of them before. The dialogue is often lame, as evidenced by the lines that opened this review. Points are hammered home with all the subtlety of a Louisville slugger. At one point, Hutch recounts the horrific childhood ordeal that has left him scarred and petrified of fire.
After hearing this tale, Abigail replies, 'So is that why you're afraid of fire?' No, you dumb blonde, a barbecue gone awry is to blame!
The direction relies on stock shocks and the same bag of tricks throughout, such as the creepy figure sneaking behind a protagonist in the background or foreground. That worked fine for one scene in The Sixth Sense but an entire film using that same shot every six minutes just isn't achieving its desired effect. The fact that one cares so little for the people who are endangered only further lessens the fear factor. Stay Alive, like Tron, mixes the real world with the world of video games but, as with so many movies adapted from video games, the final film falls short because gimmick and gore take precedence over character and content.
